October Highlight - Marjoram Sweet Essential Oil

Marjoram oil is extracted from Origanum marjorana (also known as Origanum hortensis) of the Lamiaceae (Labiatae) family. The extraction method is through steam distillation of the fresh and dried leaves and flowers of the plants. It is sometimes known as knotted marjoram. The main chemical constituents are sabinene, a-terpinene, y-terpinene, and others.

It has a warm, moderately spicy warm scent and may appear as colorless to pale yellow in color.

The perennial herb can grow up to 2 feet high and has a somewhat hairy stem with green oval leaves and small whitish pink flowers. Originally from the North African and Mediterranean region, the word "Origanum" is from the Greek word 'orosganos' meaning 'joy of the mountain'. Hence, it was given to newlyweds to bring good fortune. Ancient Greeks used it in medicine and perfumes. It was used to mask unpleasant smells on the floor
